Following outrage from several communities in Lenasia, the city of Johannesburg says it has abrogated the decision to cancel cremations on weekends and public holidays at the Avalon Crematorium, south of Johannesburg.
Representatives from City Parks were addressing the community of Lenasia in a meeting at the Protea Recreation centre on Monday.
Last week the city’s Reggie Moloi issued a statement saying, weekend cremations were in violation of the city’s by-laws and therefore would only be allowed on weekdays from 9am to 2pm.
Due to the cancellation of cremations, several bereaved families had to use the Brixton Crematorium in Johannesburg which is about 30km away from Lenasia.
Joburg City Parks Jennie Moodley says while there was a huge error in which the city communicated the notice, there have been serious compliance issues by undertakers including years of non-payment of fees for the cremation services.
Moodley says the by-law which was enacted after decades because of these issues, has been duly reversed by acting managing director Buki Njingoco and cremations can now take place on weekends and public holidays.
“It was short sighted on the part of the individual, he should’ve consulted, there’s due process that must be followed, it wasn’t followed. There is going be some form of consequence management but we are now unreservedly apologizing to all affected families, to the community, to the greater Lenasia community and to all people affected by this communique”
Moodley says there will be a review of the cremation by-law with wide public consultations before it’s finally signed into law.
