A Student Taxi Exchange Facility (STEF) project to transport learners attending various schools in Lenasia has been abandoned by the City of Johannesburg.
The STEF project was initiated by the city of Johannesburg together with local government last year.
Lenasia residents pursued legal action against the city of Johannesburg for the STEF project arguing that while they support the scholar initiative, they are opposed to the current site of the project saying they were never consulted about the facility and that it will cause traffic congestion and affect road users.
The STEF initiative was expected to be constructed in the park on Nirvana Drive, opposite Nurul Islam masjid.
Lenasia Active Citizenry’s Asiya Bulbulia says they have been notified by the city of of Johannesburg that the STEF project would not proceed at the current location and has been abandoned.
Bulbulia says Lenasia residents have welcomed the news.
“As Lenasia Active Citizenry and on behalf of the steering committee we are elated and pleased with the outcome. This is just a clear indication that if we stand united as a people we can achieve a lot.”
Lenasia Active Citizenry says the only issue remaining which the city of Joburg needs to resolve is the restoration of the property to its original state before the project was started.
It says the matter is still subject to litigation should the rehabilitation of the park not be forthcoming.
