The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) together with the B-well has launched a cookbook that can lower the cancer risk.
Every year 100,000 South Africans are diagnosed with cancer.
The Smart Choice Cookbook with CANSA and B-well which is free to download online is a collection of recipes that focuses on healthy cooking methods and ingredients that can positively influence cancer risk reduction.
The book covers breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as snacks and treats, with a vegetarian option included in each section.
All the recipes have been developed with CANSA’s consulting dietitian Megan Pentz-Kluyts, who is renowned for her knowledge on the role of nutrition in helping to lower the risk of cancer.
Cansa’s Erin Drayton says a large number of cancer cases diagnosed in South Africa have a root cause that is grounded in lifestyle factors.
“So its things like the fact that we don’t exercise enough, there’s a lot of smoking, a lot of alcohol intake and of course poor nutrition. All of these contribute towards a higher risk of developing cancer. Where the books comes about is that we’re are actually trying help people take care of at least one very big and important aspect of our lifestyles which is of course what we eat.”
