A Canadian man who shot and killed six members of a Quebec City mosque in 2017 has been sentenced to life in prison, although he will be eligible for parole after 40 years.

Al Jazeera reports 29-year-old Alexandre Bissonnette pleaded guilty last March to six counts of first-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder for the attack, one of Canada’s rare mass shootings.

The judge ultimately dismissed a request to decree parole ineligibility periods stretching a total of 150 years, saying that the request was “unreasonable”.

The January 2017 shooting, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced as a “terrorist attack”, provoked debate over the treatment of new arrivals at a time when a growing number of migrants crossed from the United States into the province of Quebec.

The deadly mass shooting came amid a rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes in Canada.
