Calls for Cleanup of Thembelihle

March 18, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-03-18

Residents of Lenasia have called for a cleanup of Thembelihle informal settlement and surrounding areas.

Weeks of Protest action prevented the municipality from collecting refuse which has piled up and may pose a health hazard

Local PR councilor Zarina Motala says there is a collective effort between the municipality and residents.

“This morning some caring residents assisted two ladies in Pikitup to clean up the area in front of the South Fork flats.

Meanwhile Gauteng police have confirmed that 8 people were arrested for public violence.

The police’s Kay Makhubela says the 8 protestsors arrested yesterday refused to back down.

“They blocked the roads and dispersed them but they were keeping on coming.”

Meanwhile a resident from the informal settlement told Radio Islam they are pleading for help in resolving the situation.

“I don’t know how can I relate this to anyone who’s in government just to help us for the community not to go on in this protest. Please let Mambolo come and address us.”

Police are maintaining a high visibility in the area.
