Building and Maintaining Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships have healthy characteristics such as mutual respect, understanding, patience, honesty and maintaining boundaries. They also contain a great deal of compromise, anger control and communication, but ultimately they rely on both individuals’ ability to navigate through problems.

Maintaining individuality is critical in establishing a long-lasting, healthy partnership. There should be a balance between attending to oneself and making the relationship work. Personal boundaries are the limits we set for ourselves as individuals in relationships. They protect our sense of personal identity and help guard against being overwhelmed by the demands of others.

The unique key to a healthy relationship is communication; direct and clear communication has two significant benefits. First, it suggests that both partners can express their wants and needs in a way that the other person can understand. Second, it means both partners can hear what the other person is saying and understand what is being conveyed. Not only does good communication help resolve problems that may come up, it also strengthens the connection between individuals.

Empathy also plays a massive role in a healthy relationship between two people. Being willing to take another person’s perspective is helpful in so many cases — whether in parenting, being a good neighbour, or even just letting someone merge in front of you on the highway. But it is arguably most important with the people close to you. One should strive to truly put forth the effort to try to understand their perspective, even when they might disagree with it.

Even if your relationship seems healthy, it can be helpful to step back and look for improvements you can make together. Healthy relationships are marked by an ability to recognize problems, including your own, that might threaten the long-term success of your relationship.
