Break-ins at schools can be a crippling experience for students

Worldwide it seems that schools have become a thieves’ paradise, leaving many students vulnerable. One would assume that schools, places of worship and charity organizations are sacred to communities. However, thieves worldwide are crossing this untold rule.

This week my kids’ school was broken into, and the media centre was the target. The news guttered my kids.

For many students, school is their only way to learn how to use a computer and gain the needed skills they will need for their future. In contrast, laptops and computers are the targets leaving many students facing a setback in their education.

The break-ins leave many students fearful and anxious. Most South African schools have safety protocols in place should they become targets, especially during school hours. Many children wonder if they will ever have to use the drills that are practised monthly.

Communities need to unite with an attitude of “enough is enough” and that our children’s needs and safety come first. These thieves are stealing our children’s education one laptop at a time.

Schools have become easy targets, and more must be done to prevent such crimes.
