Brand New Gauteng Highway Brings With It The Country’s Largest Inland Port

March 07, 2018

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 2018/03/07

Gauteng finance MEC Barbara Creecy has announced the start of the process to develop the new PWV 15, East-West Highway. The first since the 1970s.

The development will form part of a significant investment into infrastructure in the Ekurhuleni municipality.

Creecy indicated that the Gauteng department of transport would receive R6.4 billion in infrastructure money over the medium term.

Speaking to Radio Islam, MEC for Roads and Transport in the province, Ismail Vadi says a new inland port will be developed along the highway.

“We calling it Tambo Springs, this port will be developed by Transnet; it will be one of the largest inland ports in the country. Construction work will start at the end of next year.”

Vadi adds that all trucks travelling in from KZN will be diverted, providing some relief for motorists travelling during peak hour traffic on major highways.

“It will divert all freight trucks coming from KZN, cutting out Gillooly’s interchange altogether, and then you go straight to the airport and link up with the N1 to the R21 which will go straight to Zimbabwe.”

Vadi says the brand new highway will also act as an economic stimulator for the province.
