South Africa has alerted all border posts to be on the lookout for escaped Facebook rapist and killer, Thabo Bester, who escaped from the Mangaung Prison last year, having faked his suicide – leaving a still unidentified body burnt beyond recognition in his cell.

In the recently released, eye-opening book, “The Misery Merchants: Life and Death in Private South African”, author Ruth Hopkins tells the shocking story of Mangaung Prison.

She spoke to Radio Islam International sharing glaring insights into prison mismanagement, torture, and corruption.

The Mangaung Prison is run by a private security company, G4S, with links to Israel, where they were contracted to run prisons that detained Palestinian children and political prisoners and contracts at Guantánamo Bay. In the UK, their contract was terminated for failure to provide proper service, which resulted in prisoners fighting.

According to Hopkins, G4S is notorious for the type of service they provide and have left a trail of destruction behind them globally.

Hopkins started a private security network run by an organisation called Cop Watch and has set up a transnational network of investigative journalists investigating G4S in their own countries.

She further stated that no matter how much trouble G4S gets into, they still land contracts to guard prisons.
