Weekend violence in the Bonteheuwel community on the Cape Flats saw the killing of an alleged gang leader. Residents are afraid that the shooting may spark gang violence in the already restive township.

The victim is an alleged Dixie Boys gang leader, and the targeted shooting could reignite the gang rivalry between the Hard Living gang and the Dixie Boys.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says a case of murder was opened, and preliminary indications suggest that the shooting is gang-related, and police investigators are pursuing several leads.

Potelwa also added that the police were on high alert and were monitoring hotspots to ensure the safety and security of the residents.

Meanwhile, Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie says the incident reaffirms the community with more than 85 000 people required a police station. He says, although he has requested one over the years, there is still no results.
