Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been sentenced to 5-years in jail by an Indian court for killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run driving incident in Mumbai.
The 49-year-old Khan who was charged with culpable homicide, ran over the man after a night out drinking at an upmarket bar in Mumbai.
“You were driving the car,” the judge D.W. Deshpande told a downcast and visibly dejected Khan, according to news channel NDTV, rejecting the actor’s repeated denials over the past decade that he was behind the wheel of his Toyota Landcruiser despite the testimony of several witnesses.
In March, the actor’s driver said he had driven, while Khan rode in the passenger seat.
Khan will now be remanded to police custody.
Legal experts expect the actor to appeal against the verdict.
