Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam has come under fire for posting a series of controversial tweets about the Athan in India
The singer posted on Twitter that he found himself awoken up by the morning Athan from a masjid presumably near his house.
Nigam was apparently so displeased by the sound of Athan that he deemed it as “forced religiousness”.
The Bollywood singer that went on another Twitter rant denigrating Islam
Nigam tweeted: “And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?”
The 43-year-old singer was lambasted on social media, especially as his tweet comes at a time of rising tensions between Hindus and Muslims in the country following the rise of the far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power.
Islam is the second largest religion in India, with 14.2% of the country’s population or roughly 172 million people being Muslim.
God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India
