A 33-year-old man posing as a City Power official has been arrested for soliciting a bribe of R7000 from a resident in Lenasia South, South of Johannesburg.
It’s understood the suspect approached the complainant and offered to reconnect two prepaid electricity meters that are not registered on the system of City Power.
The suspect then demanded R7000 from the complainant.
The City of Johannesburg’s Lucky Sindane has encouraged people to report any fraud and corruption activities to authorities.
“We would like to commend the resident for refusing to be part of any corrupt activities. Corruption has no place in the city of Johannesburg. We would work with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that citizens of Johannesburg get the quality of service that they deserve.”
Sindane says the man has been charged with extortion and is expected to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate’s court on Monday,
