The Bloodhound supersonic car is expected to return to the Kalahari desert for more tests as it prepares to become the fastest car on earth.
The British team behind the project tested the car in the Northern Cape’s Hakskeenpan with the aim of breaking the world land speed record.
Running across its dry lakebed track on Saturday, the Bloodhounds sensors clocked 1,010km/h hoping to double the speed next year.
At full design speed, the car covers 1.6 kilometers in just 3.6 seconds while the thrust produced is equal to three hundred and sixty family cars.
The ninety-kilogram solid aluminum wheels have been specially designed for the desert surface. They are built to spin at up to 10,200 revolutions a minute, more than four times faster than the wheels on a F1 car at top speed.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, driver Andy Green says it is difficult to describe what it is like driving the Bloodhound.
“It’s a bit like flying a jet fighter and it’s a little bit like driving a high-performance racing car. In very simple terms, it’s very hot in the cockpit, it’s very noisy, there’s a lot of acceleration, there’s a lot “G” slowing down again and the simplest thing I can say is the ground goes past very, very quickly.”
The Bloodhound is powered by two Rolls Royce EJ200 engines normally found in a Eurofighter Typhoon jet.
