Behind the Kitchen Walls – Her sanctity, her listener, her keeper of secrets – By Mumtaz Moosa

SABERA’S POINT OF VIEW

Sabera was seriously annoyed when she saw her daughter-in-law, Taskeen collecting groceries from community members who praised her efforts to assist the muadhin and their families. Sabera felt sure that her son would be left penniless as Taskeen continued her antics.

More infuriating was that Adaam and Baboo were not only allowing her to carry on this foolishness, but they also joined in. This morning she came over to teach that idiot husband how to calculate zakah. Does he not realise we don’t need to tell everyone how much we are worth, especially my gold jewellery?

As she moped about the house, she was glad Fatima was not around as she would only increase her foul mood.

She needed something to put her back into a cheerful mood. She thought shopping would do just that as she remembered the new scarf and abayas at the Turkish boutique.

As she headed out, Sabera thought about the “Jannat-ki-Jalebis”, who all thought they were destined for Jannah, and she sneered.

She bumped into Amina at the front door and asked her to accompany her on her shopping spree. Amina was adamant that she would only go if Taskeen was invited along. Sabera baulked at the idea.

But Amina wasn’t done, and she dropped a bombshell on her mother as she informed her that her mother-in-law would join them for Eid.

Sabera had lost all inclination to go shopping, but she needed to collect the paint for the kitchen. She suddenly realised she would have to get the house properly spruced up if they had guests.

RAMADAN TIP:

Sadaqah is a charity given voluntarily to please Allah. It can be an act of charity towards others, whether through generosity, love, compassion, or faith. These acts are not necessarily physical or monetary. Simple good deeds, such as a smile, or a helping hand, are seen as acts of sadaqah.
