Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has assured Cape Town residents that a plan of action is in place to mitigate the effects of the devastating drought gripping the Mother City.
Mokonyane says the Western Cape is feeling the brunt of the drought, because it has been largely dependent on winter rainfalls, which they didn’t get this year.
“The winter rainfall didn’t yield any good results, which therefore calls for an intervention.”
She says the department is now part of the provincial Disaster Mangement branch.
“This branch looks at the drilling of boreholes, issuing of new water licenses in order to go ahead with exploration in other places.”
Mokonyane says desalination plans are being put in place taking the location of the Western Cape in to consideration.
“There is sufficient water coming from the two oceans that surrounds the province.”
She says that Cape Town is currently experiencing level five water restrictions.
The Water Minister has stressed that ‘behavioural change’ by businesses and residents is pivotal to minimise the effects of the drought affecting the Western Cape.
We make du’aa that Allah SWT send upon us helpful, wholesome and healthy rain, beneficial not harmful rain, now, not later.
