Outgoing chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) Baleka Mbete, has endorsed Cyril Ramaphosa to be the next president of the party.
Mbete who was initially running for the top position herself, made the announcement after the first day of the party’s 54th national conference at Nasrec in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Mbete says she supports Ramaphosa because she shares a number of ideas with him on issues affecting the party and how to resolve them.
“We publicly endorse comrade Cyril Ramaphosa. We have been talking and we agree on the issues of maximizing unity.”
Mbete says Ramaphosa is also the leader that can help ANC win the elections in 2019.
“We should always think not very much here and now but we should think far as we have a broader responsibility to our people.”
Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are seen as front-runners in the race to succeed President Jacob Zuma.
