Ayurvedic ‘Cure’ for Coronavirus under Fire in India

June 24, 2020

The Indian government has told a ‘hugely popular’ Indian guru that he needed to prove his claims, after he promoted herbal remedies as a cure for coronavirus. Baba Ramdev said the remedy, which was to be sold at $7, was to be made available from next week.

Ramdev claimed the ‘cure’ was 100% successful on almost 300 test patients. He touted two products, “Coronil” and “Swasari” as being able to cure a coronavirus infection within a week. Ramdev said, “Some 280 patients were included in the clinical trials and 100% recovered.” News24 reports that Ramdev claimed sixty-nine percent of those participating in the trial recovered in three days, while the rest recovered within seven. Ramdev further said the trials were conducted in association with India’s state run National Institute of Medical Sciences.

It’s not known if India’s drug authority has endorsed the products.

Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved company is reportedly worth several hundred million dollars. News24 reports it sells everything from toothpaste to jeans.

According to the daily, India’s Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy said it has requested more details from Patanjali Ayurved. The company was told not to advertise by AYUSHI, until it’s products were investigated.

Ramdev had once claimed to have manufactured a product that enabled parents to have a boy child.
