Police are searching for seven awaiting trial prisoners after they escaped from the Lenasia Magistrates Court this afternoon.
It’s understood police were escorting inmates to the holding cells at the court when a group of prisoners in the holding cells overpowered and assaulted two police officer before breaking the main door and escaping.
The police’s Captain Mpande Khoza says the awaiting trial prisoners are considered dangerous.
“They managed to climb on top of the court roof and jump on the side of the taxi rank. The police have managed to arrest few of them before they jumped.”
The men had appeared on a range of charges including robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Police have called on the public to contact Crime Stop if they have information and not to confront the men themselves.
