The Lenasia Active Citizenry Committee has formed a group comprising of local residents to cleanup and maintain the Avalon Cemetery, south of Johannesburg, which has become neglected and fallen into disarray.
Yusuf Bulbulia, spokesperson for the Lenasia Active Citizenry Committee said the group was initiated after they received a number of complaints from people regarding the bad state of the cemetery.
“We’ve been getting a lot of complaints with regards to the long grass, the graves sinking in, flooding, the roads that have massive potholes and are in a bad condition.”
Bulbulia said City Parks had been notified through the local councillor for the cemetery to be maintained.
“I went personally to check if it was done, but unfortunately nothing was done,” said Bulbulia.
Bulbulia said the ‘Cleaning Avalon Cemetery’ group would be meeting early this weekend either on Saturday or Sunday between 7 & 8am at Avalon Cemetery to do the cleanup. “We have requested people to come with their lawnmowers, weed cutters and wheelbarrows.”
“This is not going to be a once-off thing. We want to continue every month,” said Bulbulia.
