A senior research associate at the Auwal Socio-Economic Research Institute (ASRI) says the façade the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has created that it’s an anti-corruption party is false and misleading.

Imraan Buccus was speaking to Radio Islam on Friday during the weekly Asri report which focuses on various political issues in the country.

The red berets have come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks following an article by Daily Maverick journalist Pauli van Wyk.

The Daily Maverick reported that Brian Shivambu, his brother EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, party president Julius Malema and the EFF were involved in corrupt activities and illicit schemes and deals to fraudulently fleece money from VBS Mutual Bank.

Baccus says the EFF has been corrupt from the time of Malema’s support for former President Jacob Zuma.

“While Malema and the EFF articulate a pro-left agenda, we know from much of what’s happening at the national conversation that this party is corrupt and individuals like Malema are certainly corrupt and we know with the links to Carnilinx and other questionable characters of the country.”

Buccus says the post-apartheid, post-colonial phenomena shows that the EFF and other leftist parties also want access to state resources.

“I think for people like Malema and many others, social mobility is highly dependent on their access to state resources, so there’s a huge desire to loot the public purse.”

Baccus says the EFF’s commitment to people who live on the margin is overwhelmed and overshadowed by their commitment to being corrupt and personal accumulation as leading characters in the party have shown that their sole focus is personal wealth.
