Arrest Warrants Issued for Officers Charged in Rayshard Brooks Killing

June 18, 2020

The since dismissed Atlanta police officer who killed a black man outside a Wendy’s fast-food restaurant last week, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. It’s emerged that the officer had kicked the dying Rayshard Brookes after shooting him twice in the back, while his partner stood on Brooks’ shoulder.

The killing took place last Friday night, after staff at Wendy’s called the police, when Brooks fell asleep in his car at the fast food establishment’s drive through line. 27-year-old Brooks failed a sobriety test and the officers began to arrest him, prompting Mr. Brooks to grapple with them, grab one of their Tasers and run.

The New York Times reports that Former officer, Garrett Rolfe, faces a total of 11 charges, and his partner, Devin Brosnan, three counts, including aggravated assault and violations of oath. He remains on the police force on administrative duty, and is cooperating with prosecutors in the investigation. His attorneys, however, say he is not a state witness. Atlanta’s police chief resigned following Brooks’ shooting, which has further fuelled the race and policing tensions rocking the United States.

Prosecutors said that Rolfe said, “I got him,” after having shot Brooks. Both he and Brosnan failed to render aid to Brooks.

Latest reports from CNN read that arrest warrants have been issued, for both Rolfe and Brosnan.

US President, Donald Trump, meanwhile, defended Mr. Rolfe on Wednesday evening, saying, “You can’t resist a police officer, and if you have a disagreement, you have to take it up after the fact.” Trump added, “I hope he gets a fair shake, because police have not been treated fairly in our country.”
