A video circulating on TikTok claimed that most fitness shoes cause foot health issues and that some should be avoided.

Speaking to Radio Islam International, podiatrist Yaseera Hajee said that specific fitness shoes are made for a specific use, like a running shoe with a spring front cannot be used in the gym as it would be pushed forward. Also, every individual has a unique type of fit. Some have flat feet, and others have high arches, making it essential to choose after having your feet assessed for your foot type to choose the right shoe.

When selecting a shoe, knowing the function of the shoe is vital.

Pick a shoe with a comfortable and soft sole for everyday wear, and the toe box shouldn’t be too narrow, so the toes don’t squish inside. There should be enough space (about half an inch) from the longest toe to the end of the shoe and deep enough for the heels to fit in. The material the shoe is made of is also essential.

Your feet carry your whole body weight; they are the wheels of your body. You can not change your feet but invest in suitable shoes. Always select correctly and decide on something comfortable that won’t cause pain.

Hajee said that a person should not wear worn-out shoes as these cause injuries and affect performance. Those with flat feet should invest in shoes with built-in arches or orthotic insoles.

Flat shoes, like flip-flops, can cause much pain and problems if worn for long periods as they do not absorb shock.
