Are We Giving the Muazzin the Honour & Respect He Deserves?

October 09, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 09-10-2017

Have you ever invited your Muazzin (one who calls to prayer) and his family over for a meal? Did you ever, at least, think of inviting them and Why?

This was the question posed to Radio Islam listeners by Sabaahul Muslim presenter Ml Sulaiman Ravat this morning hoping to gauge the relationships the community has with Muazzin’s of Masaajid.

The question no doubt strikes a chord, but invokes a person to reflect about their actions towards those that play a critical role in the Masaajid.

Besides the athaan, Muazzin’s are also responsible for the upkeep of the masjid and if they are Hafez, they sometimes lead the salaah.

Ml. Ravat says while Imams get invited frequently by the community, the Muazzin may not be afforded the same courtesy even though they hold a very dignified position in society.

“The Imam’s Masha’Allah get a lot on invites, they get honored. The whole idea is not that they (Muazzin) don’t have money or food in their homes. We are not talking about charity, but rather an invite where you actually give them the respect and honor that they deserve.”

Ml Ravat says while many people would find it difficult to answer the thought provoking question with an extension of an invitation, there are others that give Muazzin’s money with ulterior motives.

“They give the Muazzin money because they want to influence him in terms of which window stays open…Who puts the air-con’s on, the sound levels of the mic system. Others give it sincerely, they understand that Muazzin’s by and large in the main are underpaid.”

Radio Islam received a number of responses to the question.

One listener said: “I never thought about inviting the Muazzin’s family’s because I suppose my parents never did that. But from now on I will try and do that Insh’Allah.”

Another listener said: I’ve heard of a woman who passed away on the 15th night of Sha’baan. I later heard that she used to regularly invite the Muazzin to her home to partake meals with her family. I’ve wondered what Allah loved for her so much that he called her on such an auspicious night.”

Muazzin’s hold a very high rank in Islam.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “If people came to know the blessing of calling Adhan and the standing in the first row, they would draw lots to secure these privileges.” (Because everybody would want that privilege) [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
