The Executive Director of The Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan Chapter (CAIR-MI) says a controversial exhibition featuring cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Dallas in Texas was organised by one of the biggest leading Islamophobes and anti-Muslim bigots in America.
Dawood Waleed says Pamela Gellar has been involved in a number of controversies slurring Islam.
“She organised a competition of giving out a $ 10,000 reward for who could draw the most offensive cartoon of Nabi Muhammad (PBUH).
Waleed said Gellar planned the exhibition for a while and based upon her hate for Islam has been lifted by civil rights groups as a hero in the US.
On Sunday two gunmen were shot dead at the exhibition outside the Curtis Culwell Center in the Dallas suburb of Garland.
The two armed suspects drove up to the front of the building in a car as the event, was coming to an end, and began shooting at a security officer.
Garland police officers then exchanged fire with the gunmen and both suspects were shot dead.
“These two guys didn’t even target the actual conveners of the event which were Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer,” said Waleed.
“It makes one wonder if they were just trying to make a political statement against police officers in the United States of America. Both of them were African-American males and there have been a number of black people who have been shot and killed by police officers all throughout America recently.”
Waleed says the Islamophobic mentality is definitely growing in America.
“These people are a minority but a growing minority of people who want to point the finger about everything that’s bad in the world and blame Muslims without looking at foreign policy or other extremist groups throughout the world that do acts of terror and hate.”
Waleed indicated that the only real way that Muslims can work against Islamophobia like how the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did is to spread goodness and improve themselves.
“In my mind a lot of it has to do with us improving ourselves and showing the people the true image of Islam reflected by the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah.”
