It is understood that de Ruyter informed board chairperson Mpho Makwana of his decision earlier in the week.
News24 understands that De Ruyter’s resignation could lead to the departure of several other senior executives and engineers from Eskom. Eskom chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer, De Ruyter’s number two, is set to retire in April 2023.
This comes as South Africa has been facing worsening load shedding this year, with Stage 7 predicted in the near future.
Eskom repeatedly stated that the dire state of its ageing coal fleet means that breakdowns will increase and maintenance cannot be postponed.
Meanwhile, according to the Bureau for Economic Research, the country’s economy has managed to grow by 1.6% in the third quarter.
