ANC: “World United Against Decision by Trump to Recognize Jerusalem as Israel Capital”

December 09, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 09-12-2017

The African National Congress (ANC) has condemned the decision by the US President Donald Trump to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel saying the move severely undermines the spirit of multilateralism and is a significant setback to a fragile and already stalled peace process.

Trump has reversed decades of US policy and recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite warnings from around the world that the gesture further drives a wedge between Israel and the Palestinians.

In a much anticipated speech in Washington on Wednesday Trump said he ordered the state department to develop a plan to relocate the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

ANC Deputy Secretary General Jesse Duarte says the decision taken by Donald Trump to move the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognising it as the capital of Israel is a completely wrong decision.

“It’s for the first time in our history for a very long time that entire world is united against a decision made by the US. This decision will undoubtedly cause many, many people to die, it will exacerbate the genocide of the people of Palestine by the Israeli army.”

Duarte says the ANC remains committed to the two state solution and that the unilateral pronouncement by the US harms Palestinian aspirations for an independent, peaceful state coexisting side by side with Israel, based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
