ANC Vow Not to Disrupt Mashaba During State of the City Address (SOCA)

May 03, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 03-05-2017

Security is expected to be tight as Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba prepares to deliver his highly anticipated maiden State of the City of Address (SOCA).

Mashaba is expected to outline the gains made by his administration following the loss of the metro by the ANC in last year’s local government elections.

SOCA comes nine months after he ascended high office following the 3 August 2016 local government elections, is expected to set the tone for his administration for the next four years.

Last month the city’s Integrated Development Plan meeting in Midrand degenerated into chaos and bloodshed when Joburg councillors met under the same roof.

The ANC’s Jolidee Matongo, says the party’s caucus in the Johannesburg council will “engage” with Mashaba’s address, but the ANC does not expect much from him.

“We will afford ourselves the opportunity tomorrow to listen to what the mayor has to say. Go back home and prepare ourselves for the debate on Friday.”

Matongo says ANC members will not disrupt Mashaba’s address.

“We will be 100% disciplined in council and make sure it proceeds as expected. If it does not proceed as expected, we deprive ourselves and those we represent of the opportunity to listen to what the mayor says and prepare ourselves to respond accordingly.”

Matongo says the ANC has accepts its position as the opposition.
