African National Congress (ANC) Deputy Secretary General Jesse Duarte has confirmed that voting for the new leadership of the party is expected to take place on Sunday afternoon, with the results announced on Monday morning.
Duarte spoke to the media in a special briefing after being in a closed session to discuss accreditation at the 54th ANC Conference in Nasrec, which has now been adopted
This means that the programme will now continue as scheduled after long delays and allegations of bogus delegates and problems with registrations.
Duarte says there will be an open session where nominations for the top six positions in the ANC will be put forward.
“Our independent election commission will go and develop a ballot paper and we hope to start voting at some point later this afternoon. And those results as it now stands possibly by tomorrow morning. We don’t rush results.”
Duarte also says the PEC’s of KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State who are not branch delegates will not be allowed to vote including 35 delegates from the North West who have been disqualified.
She has denied claims that there were branches that inflated the size of their delegations.
“There was no inflation whatsoever of the numbers, I’ve been reading all of this everyday and I’ve been wondering where this is coming from.”
Duarte says the voting delegates now stands at 4776.
