ANC Confirms Recall of Jacob Zuma

February 13, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 13-02-2018

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that it has recalled President Jacob Zuma, but says leading members had not been able to agree on when he should go.

Secretary General Ace Magashule briefed the media on Tuesday following a 13-hour marathon meeting on Monday by the NEC at the Saint Georges Hotel in Irene in Pretoria to discuss Zuma’s fate.

Magashule says the decision to recall Zuma was taken after an exhaustive process, in the interests of the country and the ANC and the determination to handle the matter with utmost dignity.

“The NEC therefore decided to recall its deployee, Comrade Jacob Zuma, in accordance with Rule 12.2.21.2 of the ANC Constitution, which accords the NEC the authority to “recall any public representative”.

However it is unclear whether Zuma will resign.

Magashule says that they have not given Zuma a deadline to respond and that the ANC has not discussed any motion of no confidence in the president.

“It’s important to note that this is the decision of the ANC NEC as a collective, not any other grouping. We are expecting that Comrade Zuma will respond tomorrow.”

Magashule says Zuma indicated that given the challenges confronting the ANC, the NEC reconsider the time frame, pleading to remain in office for at least three months following which he would resign, but the NEC felt that period was too long and declined his request.

He says the ANC wants Ramaphosa to become president of the country but could not confirm who will be his deputy.
