The African National Congress (ANC) has made a clean sweep of the Ekurhuleni council retaining the three key positions of speaker, mayor and chief whip.
Mzwandile Masina has been elected the new mayor at the municipality’s inaugural council meeting today receiving 117 of the 224 votes, while the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Ghaleb Cachalia received 106 votes.
The party’s Jongisiwe Dlanathi has been announced as the new chief whip while Patricia Khumalo retained her position as speaker of the council.
Masina thanked those who voted for the party in the city, saying they have made this Ekurhuleni the only metro in the province under the ANC.
“I must thank you the people of Ekurhuleni for not selling your souls to the highest bidder.”
Proceedings were briefly disrupted by Cachalia earlier who objected to Masina’s nomination, arguing if Masina was still a paid Member of Parliament, he would be ineligible for the nomination of mayor.
