Political analyst Professor Andre Duvenhage has told Radio Islam, the house arrest of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe may be the end of his term as leader of the country.
Zimbabwe’s army confined Mugabe and his wife Grace to their home, triggering speculation of a military coup, though the military’s supporters called it as a “bloodless correction.”
The military seized power earlier on Wednesday, targeting so-called “criminals” around Mugabe but gave assurances on national television that the 93-year-old leader and his family were “safe and sound”.
Duvenhage says the action by the military is a symptom of Praetorian politics, from the Latin word praetor, which means the army can intervene or act in the context of politics.
He says the 93-year-old Mugabe is in deep trouble and should have foreseen the problems facing Zimbabwe.
“There is a need for succession as it was clear that President Mugabe would like to see his wife Grace becoming the president of Zimbabwe. He sacked Emmerson Mnangagwa which was the deputy president, and from there the lions was activiated.”
He says this is the end of Mugabe’s 37-year rule and the long time leader will possibly be relegated to a ceremonial or very minor position in the Zimbabwean government.
“He will most probably play a bit of transitional role during the transitional period, but this is the end of Robert Mugabe, allocating values and scares products in way politicians are doing it.” (sic)
Duvenhage says while he believes what is happening in Zimbabwe is a coup d’état, the military will not admit it, because this would require the intervention of SADC.
