A political analyst has told Radio Islam that Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota’ comments accusing President Cyril Ramaphosa of selling out struggle leaders to the Special Branch during the 1970s while opportunistic and a politicking strategy,  it’s also about Ramaphosa’s undeserved reputation of building the African National Congress (ANC) and uniting people.

Terror Lekota made the remarks as part of his speech during the debate on Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation address.

Lekota claims that when confronted with the difficult conditions of detention, Ramaphosa wrote to the Special Branch claiming that his fellow prisoners “put Communist ideas in your head” and in doing so, condemned the rest to the Special Branch.

Political analyst Mzoxolo Mpolase says Lekota’s party is not in the best position and used his speech to get Cope on the lips of the voting public including being part of the pre-election cycle.

“There’s also a legitimate things which is what he raised. Perhaps he’s peeved by how Cyril Ramaphosa has been able to galvanize so many different forces and also enjoy a status of being a ‘media darling’ as it were. So it’s a sense of maybe undeserved reputation Terror Lekota would assess.”

Mpolosae says while Ramaphosa addressed the concerns by Lekota and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Dali Mpofu which may not be satisfactory to the opposition, the president feels his response works for him.
