Political analyst Andre Duvenhage says former Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has serious legal challenges ahead of her and is currently in a very difficult political space at the moment.

De Lille on Sunday announced that she will be heading her own political party and will fight it out with the bigger parties in the 2019 elections.

She says she wants to exert her own authority and not be faced with the many constraints normally found in larger political entities with disparate constituencies.

Duvenhage says he doesn’t believe that de Lille will survive the political situation she currently finds herself in.

“There are serious legal challenges ahead of her and I’m not 100% sure that she’s necessarily going to survive this because some of these are major things that are implicated and that was not on record when she had the big fights with Democratic Alliance leadership.”

Duvenhage also says despite forming a new party, historically new movements do not easily define success in terms of a support base.

“She’s going to find it difficult to organise and mobilise against the DA. She’s probably going to get some support from groupings within the so called coloured community. But I think, that she’s going to find it very difficult to establish herself as a politician within the structures of politics in the future.”

Duvenhage says while de Lille is a natural survivor like former President Jacob Zuma and late Winnie Madikizela Mandela, she is going to need to be resilient if she is to survive the current political climate.
