Political journalist Carien du Plessis has told Radio Islam the African National Congress (ANC) is in a catch 22 situation following the flagging of Deputy President David Mabuza and Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe as problematic parliamentary candidates by the party’s integrity committee.
Mabuza who is also the ANC’s deputy president, and Mantashe the party’s national chairperson, are among 22 individuals about whom questions have been raised by the integrity committee.
Du Plessis says while both Mabuza and Mantashe may not be liked by some voters, they are popular amongst others.
“He (Mabuza) is popular in Mpumalanga and he can draw votes there. Same with Gwede Mantashe, he was elected to his position as chairperson by ANC members and he’s popular in the Eastern Cape and he draws votes there. So it’s really a messy situation and a catch 22. But my guess it that the ANC is going to leave it for after elections to deal with the fallout.”
Du Plessis says while other ANC members who are also on the list like ministers Nomvula Mokonyane, Bathabile Dlamini and Zweli Mkhize have featured strongly at the State Capture Commission, taking action against them is a slow process.
“You can’t just take action against them. There hasn’t been a court case, there hasn’t been actual proof or actual guilty findings. So if you take action against them you have to take action against a bunch of other people when there’s allegations arising. So I think it’s a difficult conundrum for the ANC.”
Du Plessis says while the ANC Integrity Committee can only make recommendations to the National Executive Committee (NEC) it’s the NEC that can take action against members of the party.
