Al Baraka Bank Implements Additional Security After Tunnel Robbery

May 03, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 03-05-2018

Al Baraka Bank in Fordsburg says it has implemented additional security at the bank after criminals managed to break in by digging an underground tunnel.

It’s believed the group used the tunnel to tap into the sewage pipe early Wednesday morning allowing them passage into the bank.

Police say no money was taken but criminals made off with laptops.

This is the second robbery at the bank after criminals broke into the facility in December 2016 by digging a tunnel to gain entry.

Al Baraka Chief Operating Officer Mohammed Kaka says the Joburg CBD has a network of tunnels from the old mining days that criminals use to target banks and businesses.

Kaka says they’ve taken the necessary steps to secure the Al Baraka Bank.

“What we can handle in terms of what’s above ground, we’ve put in extra security. But what’s below the ground that is unfortunately nothing that we have control over.”

Al Baraka says limited services at the branch have been reinstate on Thursday following the robbery.
