Chants of “Free, Free Palestine echoed in Lenasia this morning as more than 400 pupils from the Al Aqsa School marched through the streets in solidarity with the Palestinian people during Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW).
Organised by Palestinian lobby group BDS, the 13th Israel Apartheid Week officially kicked off in Johannesburg on Monday.
IAW aims to highlight the plight of Palestinians under the oppression of the Israel.
Various events from film viewings, sport events and public lectures will be held across the country and other global cities.
Coordinator of the march, Amina Moola says the picket was organised as part of IAW and also to educate the youngsters about the plight of the Palestinian people under the Israeli regime.
“Israeli Apartheid is a very good thing. It makes our children aware of what’s going on in Palestine and to be part of that so that they can also share in that and as they grow older they take a more active role.”
About 250 cities across the world are involved in IAW while in South Africa it’s endorsed by 85 organizations, including lobby groups, political parties and trade unions.
