Aid Workers ‘Executed’ in Nigeria

July 23, 2020

Five aid workers have been killed in Nigeria. According to the BBC they had been abducted last month in Borno State. The Boko Haram group is being held responsible for their murder.

Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari said the men were working for Action Against Hunger, the International Rescue Committee, Rich International and the country’s State Emergency Management Agency. He has vowed to bring the killers to justice, and to “wipe out the remaining vestiges” of the group.

The men were abducted as they travelled on the main road to Maiduguri from the town of Mondongo. This was the same stretch of highway where four other aid workers were killed last December.

Online Nigerian newspaper Premium Times posted a 35-second video of the executions. Five hooded armed men stand with the blindfolded hostages, while an unidentified voice delivers a speech to ‘the infidels’. One of the gunmen then orders the others to shoot the hostages.

Action Against Hunger said it deeply regretted that it’s calls for the release of the men had gone in vain, while the International Rescue Committee condemned the killings as senseless and barbaric.

Meanwhile, UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria Edward Kallon said it was not acceptable that those trying to help were being attacked and killed.
