Ahmed Timol’s nephew says the anti-Apartheid activist’s father died a broken man after losing his eldest son.
Imtiaz Cajee was giving evidence in the Pretoria High Court today into the inquest of Timol’s death at the John Vorster Square police station in 1971.
Timol died after falling from the tent floor.
While the inquest in 1972 found Timol had killed himself, new evidence suggest he was murdered by the security branch.
Cajee says his father was devastated by Ahmed Timol’s death.
“My grandfather died in 1981 and he died a broken man after the loss of his eldest son.”
Cajee says when his grandmother Hawa testified at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1996, he could not hold back his tears.
“On that particular day, my lord, I made a silent vow to myself, that from this day onward, I am no longer just going to speak about Uncle Ahmed, I am going to do something constructive in memory of my beloved uncle.”
Cajee ended his testimony with several recommendations for the court including a dedicated team of law enforcement officials to investigate apartheid-era cold cases and all information relating to those cases to be declassified.
The inquest resumes on Wednesday.
