More than six months after a High Court last year found that anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol did not commit suicide but was rather murdered, his family say they are being pushed from pillar to post on when the trial of his alleged killers will begin.
The court overturned a 40-year-old inquest finding on Timol’s death, ruling that he didn’t commit suicide.
Police claimed Timol jumped to his death from the 10th floor of the 13 storey John Vorster Square 46 years ago.
While the inquest in 1972 found Timol had killed himself, new evidence suggest he was murdered by the security branch.
Timols nephew Imtiaz Cajee told Radio Islam it’s frustrating that the start of the trial of alleged killers of the anti-apartheid activist is dragging on.
“The challenge this poses is, as everyday moves on, Joao Rodrigues, Neville Els and Seth Sons move closer to leaving this world. They are in their late seventies and in the early eighties and it’s a perfect opportunity for us to confront the truth as to what had transpired.”
Cajee says there are many that don’t want the truth about what happened on that fateful day to be revealed.
“We have many of them within our own ranks, within our own communities. We cannot runaway from this fact that we had informants that operated within our community, in our own families and extended families. These are realities of our past, no matter how painful they are for us to confront.”
Last week the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that it intends to investigate 15 cases that were referred to them by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
