Former anti-Apartheid activist Ahmed Timol’s nephew Imtiaz Cajee says it has been a demanding task to capture the life of a fallen hero in 48 minutes.
A television documentary of the life and times of Timol, called “Indians Can’t Fly”, has been nominated for the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).
Cajee says the documentary is an overall biography of Timol’s life to educate South Africans who never heard the name of the anti-apartheid stalwart.
He says despite the criticism of the documentary from the community who wanted to know what actually happened to Timol, there is overwhelming support for the initiative.
“It has taken people back to a very difficult and traumatic in our country and pictures of my late grandmother testifying at the TRC, pictures of the thousands of people that attended the janaza of my late uncle.”
Timol says the pure brutality of the apartheid regime has brought back a lot of painful memories and overwhelming support and response that people need to continue preserving the legacy of his beloved uncle and also to pursue many unanswered questions.
The story of the 29-year old Roodepoort teachers has been nominated in three categories with the winners who will be revealed at two star-studded ceremonies at Gallagher Estate next month.
