The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has confirmed the Anti-apartheid struggle stalwart’s condition has deteriorated in the last 24 hours.
In a statement the foundation says 87-year-old Kathrada had “experienced several post-operation complications, rendering his condition serious”
Kathrada was hospitalised in Johannesburg earlier this month for surgery related to blood clotting on the brain.
The Foundation’s Director Neeshan Balton says they will keep the public informed on a regular basis about Kathrada’s condition.
Balton says the public should continue remembering Kathrada, his family and friends in their prayers.
“Kathrada has contracted pneumonia, which has affected both his lungs. Despite appropriate medical care, his condition is deteriorating. He is currently comfortable.”
Balton says while the hospital is not allowing any visitors, members of the public are welcome to post messages of support on the foundations Facebook page or leave cards and flowers at their offices at Signet Terrace Office Park in Lenasia.
