This morning, ActionSA chairperson in KZN, Zwakele Mncwango and ActionSA eThekwini regional leader, Thozama Qoqa, led a morning picket in front of the Durban City Hall. They demanded Speaker Thabani Nyawose exercise his powers to remove ANC Ward Councillor Muzimuni Ngiba.
Councillor Ngiba was arrested in March 2022 and later denied bail in his application in May 2022 and has been in custody since. It is alleged that the councillor of Ward 101 in Cato Crest has been charged with the murder of ANC councillor candidate Siyabonga Mkhize while campaigning for local government elections in the Cato Crest informal settlement in November 2021. Ngiba was re-elected in a by-election, but it was later found that Ngiba was involved in the murder of his colleague.
Zwakele Mcnwango told Radio Islam International ActionSA questions why a councillor who had been in jail for a year was still receiving full perks.
“Mncwango said Nyawose could have invoked the code of conduct to remove a councillor who missed three meetings but failed to do so. We can’t have a councillor accused of murder and still collecting a paycheck of approximately forty-five thousand rands a month from ratepayers of eThekwini,” says Mncwango.
Preparations are underway on a report to the council to be tabled at the end of May in a council meeting.
