Following another fatal accident on Flamingo Street in Lenasia, a local ward councilor says he has engaged with authorities to possibly provide more visible policing in the area to curb the high increase of crashes on the deadly stretch of road.
This follows an incident on Wednesday after a 31-year-old man was tragically killed when a bakkie knocked him down.
From eyewitness accounts, it’s understood the driver of another vehicle skipped a stop street on Agapanthus Avenue and knocked into the bakkie which then lost control and ploughed into the cyclist who was at the Total Service Station, two other cars and a light pole before coming to a halt.
The notorious Flamingo street has seen a number of fatal accidents over the years with motorists, especially youngsters speeding down the stretch at ridiculous speeds unable to stop at the robot at the top of the road.
Residents have continuously urged authorities to address the issue.
Ward Councillor Kishore Badal told Radio Islam, that this time action would hopefully be taken.
“I have had some discussions with JMPD, SAPS and the JRA primarily around enforcement within the area and being more visible.”
Badal says he was also approached by two crèche’s on Flamingo Road including another resident calling for him to address the issues of reckless driving and for the installation of speed humps on the street.
“We’ve gone through the process, we done the petition, we submitted it. Following the most recent accident, we’ve agreed that on Monday we will tend in the motivation to that particular motivation in terms of reinforcing and accelerating the coming into being of those humps”
After the claiming so many lives, residents are hoping that Flamingo Street can become safe again.
