African National Congress (ANC) treasurer general Paul Mashatile says calls for the party’s secretary general Ace Magashule to step down from his position was not discussed at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte and Mashatile held a briefing on Wednesday on the latest developments within the party.
The briefing follows Tuesday night’s emergency meeting of the party’s top six in the wake of the warrant of arrest issued by the Hawks for Magashule over the controversial asbestos tenders in the Free State, which cost over R200 million.
Mashatile says Magashule briefed the NEC about the letter he has received from law enforcement agencies and that he will cooperate and attend court on Friday
“The issue of stepping down is a matter that the NEC is still seized with and I am sure in the next NEC the matter will be further discussed. So we didn’t venture into discussing that. Did comrade Ace himself volunteer to stepping down? I’ve already answered that, we did not discuss the matter.”
Magashule is expected to make his first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday.
The ANC says Magashule expressed his preference to officials, that he would not want any individual or groups to march, print posters, t-shirts and placards on this matter and in his name.
The party says in the spirit of the 54th Conference resolutions, it continues to condemn all acts of corruption and malfeasance.
