Accountability Now has vowed to take the head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), attorney Shamila Batohi, to court to compel her to investigate and prosecute former president Jacob Zuma, Police Minister Bheki Cele, and other high-profile cases.

Two high-profile cases were highlighted by Accountability Now. First, it wants the NPA to expedite the prosecution of Zuma and former justice minister Michael Masutha for the removal of Mxolisi Nxasana as NDPP in 2013.

Also, Cele’s role in the improper granting of two R1.7 billion leasing contracts when he was police commissioner in 2010 should be investigated and prosecuted as soon as possible, according to the organisation.

Director of Accountability Now, advocate Paul Hoffman spoke to Radio Islam International; he claims to have written Batohi a letter accusing her and the NPA of delaying two months ago.

Hoffman has threatened to take the matter to court, requesting an order compelling Batohi to investigate all of the cases and prosecute where necessary.

To solve the situation, it has proposed a constitutional amendment to the National Prosecutions Act.

Accountability Now also wants the Zuma twins, Duduzane and Duduzile, to be investigated by prosecutors for allegedly inciting violence during the July unrests, which killed over 350 people.

Eskom also expressed its dissatisfaction with the Special Investigating Unit’s poor progress in investigating 54 allegations brought to prosecutors.

Should the NPA fail to make progress in pursuing the matters before its prosecutors, the power utility indicated it would consider private prosecutions.
