The Abu Bakr Asvat Institute for Nation Building says it has received a number of complaints from members of the public about safety issues experienced by motorists using the Abu Baker Asvat Drive in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.
The institute says the complaints include no emergency lanes for ambulances, heavy traffic jams when a vehicle breaks down and abnormal load vehicles block both directions when using the road.
It says the nature of the problems insult the dignity and stature of the late Dr. Asvat in whose honour the road has been named.
The institute also says that during their engagement with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT) on the road naming, the narrowing of the road with current Armco barriers was not part of the proposal.
Spokesperson for the institute, Ali Osmany says they view the complaints in a very serious light.
“It definitely is a nightmare to be able to travel on that road. For JRA and SANRAl or the department of transport to have narrowed down the road is really unbelievable.”
Osmany says they are hoping the MEC for roads and transport Ismail Vadi will prioritise the concerns raised.
