On the 27th of January 1989, human rights activist and struggle stalwart Dr Abu Baker Asvat, was cold bloodedly murdered in his surgery while attending to the sick and destitute of Soweto and its neighbouring townships.

In 1989, Asvat said this to a packed audience:

“Let us have social mingling. Let Soweto swarm Lenasia. Let Eldorado Park swarm Lenasia. As well and let Lenasia swarm Eldorado Park. Then we shall have put into practice what we practice. We can’t wait till liberation because once liberation is on, it is not going to be easy to mend the injustice and the oppression this harsh system has done to the people in this country.”

Twenty-nineteen marks a significant date in the struggle history of South Africa.

This Sunday will be 30 years since late struggle hero and icon Dr. Asvat was murdered.

And sadly since his assassination 30 years ago, the nation is still plagued with more questions than answers about his death.

The ‘Abu Asvat Institutes’ Alli Osmany told Radio Islam that thirty years on, the answers to Marhoom Asvats death is not definitive.

“Regardless of the fact that there were two people who were charged tried and subsequently served a sentence, but if one looks properly at the facets of the case, the affidavits that were submitted by the accused was not properly tested, and for us, that’s quite a serious issue.”

Osmany says that the family as Muslims has found closure, but they are still emotionally scarred.

“One has to accept that, but from a perspective, there has been no certainty as to how the instruction came about for his death, why his death actually took place and it’s shrouded.”

Osmany adds that Asvats death left a huge void which is yet to be filled.
