South African Nicolaas van Wyk has called for a reduction of income tax for South African taxpayers.

He started a new petition addressed to the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, and the National Treasury.

Before the 2023 National Budget Speech, which will be presented on 22 February 2023, the petition has been made public.

Speaking to Radio Islam international, The Chartered Institute of Business Accountants (formerly SAIBA) board member Nicolaas van Wyk stated that developing new revenue streams, primarily in the tourism industry, should take precedence over raising corporation tax, the VAT tax, or personal income taxes.

“If South Africa attracts more tourists, the government would not have to tax people more.”

Van Wyk added that a safe and accessible South Africa could draw millions of visitors who will spend their money there, supporting the local economy and generating jobs.

“We think that tourism is an area that is underutilized.”

He added that approximately 25 000 people had signed the petition, which is a record-breaking number.
