eThekwini’s Electricity Unit has been discussing the status of Durban’s loadshedding schedule with Eskom.
The eThekweni metro was excluded from Stages one to three of the power cuts after it suffered significant infrastructure damage in the April 2021 floods. Much of the City’s power infrastructure was submerged in water, causing half of its load to be lost and causing network instability.
The municipality says it is aware of the speculation that Eskom will reintroduce the full loadshedding schedule for Durban residents in June. But it added that making any pronouncements at this stage will be premature.
DA caucus leader in eThekwini Thabani Mthethwa says the City isn’t ready to be included on the full schedule.
“Whenever there is load shedding, the network struggles to keep up with the load when switching back on. We are therefore urging eThekwini officials, including the City Manager, to negotiate with Eskom so that they can keep this concession until the network and infrastructure is ready to cope with the demands.”
